The tree was made unsafe by a fungal attack in the root system, and so K&S Treecare was commissioned by Sustrans to remove the crown for the safety of cyclists and walkers who cross the viaduct. Two viaducts south of Montrose were designed by Sir Thomas Bouch, the architect of the original Tay Bridge but, due to delays in building the Tay Bridge and the line by Dundee, they were not built until 1879.
